Business Development Manager
What do you do in the business?
I'm Joe Carruthers, and I am a Business Development Manager for CT Skills. My role is to deliver a personal, tailored approach to client solutions and account management. I work collaboratively with clients to understand their needs and support them with bespoke training and development options. This includes working with individuals at the very start of their careers as well as experienced staff members looking to strengthen their industry knowledge and skills. I am passionate about supporting people who want to grow, and it is incredibly rewarding to be part of their journey as they progress and achieve both personal and professional success.
What’s your background?
I have had the pleasure of working for CT Skills for the last seven years. Before that, I worked for a large corporate training provider. My journey in the apprenticeship world began in Client Engagement, before progressing into a Regional Sales Manager role and later becoming a Sales Operations Manager. Prior to working in apprenticeships, I gained experience in both recruitment and hospitality.
My career began at Hilton Hotels, where I started as a Housekeeper and was given the opportunity to develop into a Reception Manager. My hospitality journey then took me to a boutique hotel in Jersey. After returning to the mainland, I joined a hospitality software company, where I trained staff across the UK on new systems, supported data transfers, and oversaw GO LIVE transitions. I later moved into recruitment with Adecco, starting on a Temps desk and supporting clients in recruiting temporary staff. I went on to become a Branch Manager, working in a fast-paced environment that provided exposure to a wide variety of businesses and sectors.
What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve received or given?
The best career advice I can offer is: take every opportunity that comes your way. Learn as much as you can and never stop asking questions — the more you ask, the more you learn. Treat everyone with respect and build strong connections. Work for a values-driven business that invests in and develops its staff. It’s a big world out there — make the most of it and enjoy the journey.
