Safeguarding and Wellbeing Champion
What do you do in the business?
My name is Emma Gundel, and I am a Quality Lead and Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead at CT Skills. I lead the delivery of internal quality assurance (IQA) for our online course provision, ensuring that our programmes consistently meet the standards set by Awarding Organisations, CT Skills, employers, and—most importantly—our learners. I am passionate about maintaining excellence in education.
I work closely with a dedicated team of independent IQAs and tutors, supporting their development and fostering a culture of continuous improvement that has a direct impact on learner success. I also collaborate with a subcontractor to strengthen the quality and consistency of subcontracted delivery. Together, we ensure that all provision aligns with internal expectations and external regulatory requirements, maintaining a robust and learner-focused educational environment.
A key focus of my work is the ongoing development of Career Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG). I collaborate with multiple departments across CT Skills to ensure our CEIAG remains relevant, impactful, impartial, and fully centred around learners. By tailoring support to individual needs, we empower learners to navigate their education and career pathways with confidence.
As Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead, I play a vital role in promoting the safety, wellbeing, and protection of everyone within our learning community. I work closely with the Designated Safeguarding Lead and our Wellbeing Champions to implement effective support and resources, continuously updating our knowledge to remain current and responsive.
What’s your background?
My journey into education wasn’t a straight line. Like many young people, I left school unsure of what I wanted to do. I was offered an apprenticeship through a local college—my employer at the time—which introduced me to the education sector and allowed me to support adult learners. I completed the IT Users Level 3 Apprenticeship, which strengthened my skills and sparked a passion for helping others grow and succeed.
That experience gave me a clear career direction and led me into the apprenticeship sector as a trainer-assessor. I later achieved a Level 5 Certificate in Education, which gave me the confidence to teach adults. From there, I progressed into management roles and eventually into my current position as Quality Lead. Every step of my career has been shaped by a commitment to learner success and a belief in the power of education to transform lives. I’ve learned that although having a plan helps, some of the most rewarding paths are the ones you didn’t expect to take.
What’s the best piece of career advice you have received or given?
My top tip for anyone exploring their career options is simple: find something you love. When you’re passionate about your work, it shows—and it makes all the difference. Whether you’re just starting out or looking for a change, don’t be afraid to follow the opportunities that excite you. You never know where they might lead.
